Alhamra Numismatic Museum
Site Description
A historic two-story house. The ground floor showcases the history of Omani currency, from the early Islamic era through the coins used in Oman before the country began minting its own currency during the reigns of Sultan Faisal bin Turki, his son Sultan Taimur, and his grandson Sultan Said bin Taimur, during whose reign the first Omani banknotes were printed. This was followed by four subsequent banknote issues during the reigns of Sultan Qaboos (may God have mercy on them all), and finally the sixth issue during the current reign of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq (may God protect him). The display also includes coins. The first floor of the house features Islamic coins, from the Arabized Sasanian coins through the Umayyad and Abbasid periods, and other successive dynasties.
